The Denver Broncos are gearing up for a heated quarterback competition during training camp and preseason. As it stands, the team currently has five quarterbacks on the roster. General manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton have assembled a group that includes veterans Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, and Ben DiNucci, along with 2025 NFL Draft selections Bo Nix and a second rookie quarterback. All five are expected to have a shot at earning the starting role.
Bo Nix, the former Oregon standout, has been the most talked-about name since draft day. Fans are eager to see what he can bring to a franchise searching for long-term stability under center. Zach Wilson, acquired from the New York Jets, is another name generating intrigue, especially given his first-round pedigree and flashes of promise in the NFL.
Ahead of what could be a defining battle for Denver’s quarterback future, franchise legend Peyton Manning recently shared a stunning prediction. Appearing on a segment of the “Mile High Huddle,” Manning spoke candidly about the Broncos’ young quarterbacks and the risks of rushing them into action.
“I just don’t think it’s smart to start a rookie quarterback on Day 1 — even if he’s supremely talented,” Manning said. “I’ve been through it. This league doesn’t give you time to learn the hard way. Let these guys grow before throwing them into the fire.”
Manning’s words carry weight, particularly as Denver continues to search for a long-term answer at the quarterback position since his retirement in 2016. Several past attempts — from Trevor Siemian to Russell Wilson — have fallen short of expectations.
Right now, many believe Zach Wilson might have the inside track due to his NFL experience. But Bo Nix, with his poise and mobility, will be given every chance to prove himself. Jarrett Stidham and the other contenders are also in the mix.
Historically, the Broncos have struggled to successfully develop young quarterbacks in the post-Manning era. With that in mind, the organization can’t afford another misstep. If sitting Nix to begin the year is what it takes to help him grow into a franchise leader, Denver should take the cautious route. But if he shows he’s ready, it will be hard to ignore his upside.
Denver will kick off training camp on July 22 for rookies, with veterans reporting the following day on July 23.
